The Castleside multi-storey car park at Bolton Road, Banbury was permanently close on Friday 10 June 2016, a decision that has angered both residents and town centre businesses.

This part of the town has been identified for significant regeneration, and as part of the ongoing scoping and appraisal works, a recent inspection of the car park was undertaken by Cherwell District Council.

During the inspection, which was conducted by an independent structural engineer, some significant structural issues were identified. Discussions have subsequently taken place, resulting in the permanent closure of the building with immediate effect.

Cllr George Reynolds, deputy leader at Cherwell District Council said: “The future of the car park was one of the significant areas being considered in respect of the wider regeneration opportunities to improve the town centre environment. Whilst we had not intended to close the facility this early, we have now, in light of the latest inspection, no option but to do so. Both Cherwell District Council and Indigo take the findings of the structural engineers advice seriously and in coming to a decision, we agreed to cease the use of the facility due to the health and safety implications of customers using the car park and the community generally which are always of primary concern.”

Users of the car park are therefore been advised to make alternative parking arrangements.
